Regional CV conventions

These examples share the same content worldwide. The header, length and personal-data rules change by region. Showing guidance for UK (CV).

Length

One page under 5 years experience, two pages maximum for senior roles.

Photo

Not expected. Leave the photo off unless the employer asks for one.

Personal data

Name, phone, email and location only. Do not include date of birth, marital status or nationality.

Good to know

UK CVs follow the same no-photo, no-personal-data rule as North America.

Universal CV Writing Rules, Apply to Every Role

The 6-second rule

Recruiters spend an average of 6 to 10 seconds on a first pass. Your name, current role, and top two achievements need to be impossible to miss.

ATS optimisation

Most companies run CVs through Applicant Tracking Systems before a human sees them. Mirror the exact keywords and phrases from the job description, don't paraphrase them.

The PAR formula

Structure every bullet as Problem, Action, Result. 'Led project to improve X' is weak. 'Identified declining conversion rate, rebuilt the checkout flow, resulting in 18% uplift' is compelling.

Length and formatting

One page for under 5 years experience. Two pages maximum for senior roles. Consistent fonts, clear section headers, and generous white space. No photos (in UK/US) unless specifically requested.

No generic summaries

Replace 'results-driven professional with a passion for excellence' with a specific three-line summary: what you do, where you've done it, and your measurable impact.

Tailor every application

A generic CV sent to 100 employers gets worse results than 10 tailored CVs. Use RoleReady's CV Writer to create a version for each key role type.

How to write a CV (step by step)

Every CV in this collection follows a proven six-step structure. Walk through it once, and you can apply the same skeleton to any role or industry, then use RoleReady's AI CV Writer to draft each section for you.

  1. Pick the right CV format. Reverse chronological is still the safest choice for most roles. Use a functional or hybrid format only if you have a career gap or are changing industries. Keep it one page under 5 years experience, two pages max for senior.
  2. Write your professional summary last. Three lines pointing to your years of experience, your industry and your one biggest measurable win. Don't write a generic profile.
  3. List your work experience in the PAR formula. Each bullet should read Problem, Action, Result, with a number, percentage or timeframe in the result half. Aim for 5 to 7 bullets per role.
  4. Add your education and key qualifications. Include degree, institution, year, and any professional certifications relevant to the role (CFA, CIPD, PRINCE2, AWS, etc.).
  5. Build a skills section with keywords from the job description. ATS software scans for skills first. Mirror the language of the job posting, don't paraphrase it.
  6. Tailor every application. A single CV sent to 100 employers gets worse results than 10 tailored CVs. Reorder bullets, swap keywords, refresh your summary for each role.
